RAM FM: Globalization in Palestine
An English-language radio station was launched in Ramallah a few days ago. It employs reporters from around the world, thereby representing the diverse views of its listeners. This type of radio station is a modern invention in Palestine: first because its reporters come from different countries and thereby create an interaction of cultures and experiences; and second because it broadcasts in English, today’s global language. Entering the age of globalization is even more significant for this region than others, because of the prevalence of political conflict. The high level of communications of the globalized era could facilitate negotiations and dialogue. The high degree of integration and interaction between states, the extensive crossing of borders and the extent of communications in a globalized world dictates that English must become a shared international language among nations. Day after day, the importance of English language as the language of globalization, or even the language of the world in a globalized era, is demonstrated. The spreading of this language, as undertaken by RAM FM, is therefore a step in the right direction, and assists the Palestinian people to enter the modern age. Palestinians must embrace globalization and integrate into the world system so they can find a place in the world, especially as they are one of the few countries still awaiting independence. Through communicating with other nations, Palestinians can gain global recognition as a nation that deserves unity and liberation from occupation. Technology and democratic civil struggle have become the means of this era with which to realize individual and group rights. Even more so with the proliferation of NGOs and the rise in their roles and influence in local and international communities. The telecommunications revolution has made it impossible for any occupying power or oppressive regime to violate human rights and go unnoticed by people around the world. This has been clearly demonstrated through the occupation of Iraq. The telecommunications revolution is expected to escalate to an extent where people from around the world will no longer accept oppression or tyrannical acts from any oppressive regime against any group of people in the world. A future Palestinian state must take note of the requirements of such a future. As the Palestinian state has not yet been established, the Palestinians have a chance to develop a state which will not be isolated, but will be a fully integrated nation in the international system.
