One good reason

image
Part of Gaza did not need to drown in wastewater for its people to realize that they live under difficult conditions. Gaza did not need to drown in blood before it woke up from its shock of the fight between brothers, who fought over limited authority.

Had the elite been true to the people, things would have been different. Moreover, the writers, journalists and educated people and maybe the politicians would have done much more to run things in a different way more appropriate for people living in the 21st century.

We will not be fair to Gaza if we leave it to its destiny, the control of thugs, and those carrying rifles to decide its future with a bunch of meaningless slogans. We will not be fair to all Palestinians if we let part of the homeland, which has been the first to see the occupation reduced, be the end of their long history.

Chaos seems to be penetrating entire parts of the worn out body of that coastal region where rigid rules and people are forced to go back in time. What kind of example has Gaza provided after the reduction of the occupation a year and a half ago? Palestinians in Gaza turned on themselves instead of working to rebuild what the occupation had destroyed, planting the leveled farms and fields, treating psychological problems, modernizing and rebuilding. They cannot blame their incapacity on the occupation any more, though it might be hiding behind the scenes.

After Palestinians tried Fatah for 10 years and experienced a mismanaged Palestinian Authority, and then tried Hamas for one year and realized that it was unable to fix the situation, their experiment with governance – Fatah and Hamas, constituting more than three quarters of the Palestinians – proved that Palestinians are not angels. Palestinians must admit having serious problems related to the people rather than the land.

Ignorance and backwardness have made the Gaza Strip hell on eart,h not just for Palestinians but for everyone that has to live in Gaza for professional or humanitarian reasons. It is like a group of armed people have become thieves, killing and abducting people for power and money. This will most likely transform Gaza into a Kandahar or a Mogadishu.

There are more than one thousand reasons that push people to leave Gaza. However, there is reason to be optimistic. This is our one and only homeland and this alone invites us to roll up our sleeves and start immediately to rebuild what the occupation has destroyed. We must deal with ignorance, backwardness, and rigidness. We must restore the damaged liberal culture and push the homeland towards the track of globalization and catch up with the modern age.
